Following Ryder’s restoration and extension of Newcastle’s Grade II listed Worswick Chambers and 93–101 Pilgrim Street last year, the space has been reborn as a vibrant leisure and music venue. The operator fit-out, designed by Dunwoodie Swift Architects, was delivered through a close collaborative process. Now open, the new STACK returns just a few doors from its original Pilgrim Street location, finally emerging from decades of dereliction and scaffolding to widespread anticipation.

The talk explores the transformation of the existing listed buildings, where opening up a failing Grade II listed building revealed the need for deep intervention and adaptation of the planned new build. We will share the building’s journey and how close collaboration with the local authority, tenants, and specialist crafts turned decay into a catalyst for regeneration.

The primary objective of many regeneration projects, particularly historic buildings, is an approach which celebrates the significance of the original architecture. The sustainable regeneration of historic buildings therefore provides designers with opportunities and challenges in equal measure, because the preservation of such buildings often imposes restrictions on sustainability measures.

Join the CENE Climate Action Group as we discuss how these unique challenges were addressed in several case studies and how considered designs can enhance the sustainability credentials of all historic buildings.
