Polyhalite mining is a multi billion pound industry and one of the most exiting industrial developments on Teesside and in N. Yorkshire for many years.

This paper will be presented by Matt Parsons and civil engineer colleagues from Sirius Minerals Plc, who will explain the project and highlight:

  • the extent of, international significance, composition, and processing and business potential of the Polyhalite deposit
  • the planning difficulties, site(s) access, and environmental impact on the National Park including flora and fauna of the area
  • more detail on the proposed conveyor route in east Teesside from the tunnel exit to Teesport, including civil engineering considerations
  • A brief recap on the tunnel, (paper presented by ARUP last year)

This presentation will be within the context of the observed behaviour of flood embankments during the winter of 2015 and information provided in the International Levee Handbook.

The presentation will have a particular focus on UK design and construction practice and will consider the resilience of such structures.

The speakers will identify lessons learnt from a recent project (carried out jointly with the Environment Agency and HR Wallingford) which investigated the factors that led to the failures of a number of flood defence embankments during the winter of 2015.
