Join NAWIC North East for our informal First Thursday Catch-Up which includes special guest speaker Paula McMahon giving an insight into her career and ‘Things she wishes she had known’. The presentation will be followed by discussion and informal networking.
Paula McMahon has worked as a civil engineer for over 30 years much of which has been on construction sites. From an early age Paula was working on highway works supervising and setting out for Cleveland County Council. As Construction Manager on the SNF Site in Billingham Paula was responsible for over 200 site personnel. Most recently Paula’s has been inspecting structures as the Highway Structures Manager on the A19 DBFO Project for Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM). Paula now undertakes a wider role in SRM mentoring and coaching candidates who are working towards professional qualifications.
Paula is an advocate of engineers and engineering and has many voluntary roles to encourage a diverse workforce suitable for a more sustainable and equitable future. Amongst her many roles Paula is the Teesside Branch Chair and North East Vice Chair of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Founding Chair of the Tees Valley based Engineering Together (www.engineeringtogether.com), an active member of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) Tyne and Tees Cluster, a STEM and Apprentice Ambassador, a guest lecturer and Engineering Board member at Teesside University, an Editorial Panel member for the ICE Proceedings: Civil Engineering, an ICE Reviewer and a North East Chamber of Commerce Transport Forum member.
Paula also is a prolific blog writer and podcast contributor spreading positive messages about engineering, the climate crisis and the need for diversity on forums including The Tees Online, Engineering Together, Lit and Phil, Climate Action North, The Global Science Show, BIG STEM Communicators Network, STEM Ambassador Network, Science Museum Group, Norther Power Women, The Common Room, SRM Beyond 1% and WES.
