All engineers involved with construction should be aware of the increasing importance of low-carbon offsite manufacture and modern methods of construction (MMC).

Dr Hairstans will discuss developments in environmentally sound, offsite manufacture. This will cover new timber products and systems including solid laminate timber, dowel-lam, nail-lam and cross-laminated timber.

Iain will present a local civil engineering perspective based on inspection and strengthening of Jubilee Quay in the port of Sunderland.  While all ironwork had corroded away, the main timbers within reach of the water were generally sound.  Much of the deck needed replacement.
