Upgrading of the A1 to motorway standard between Leeming and Barton (A1L2B) began in March 2014 and consists of 20km of mostly online construction, with major technical and civil engineering challenges.

This is an event that is not to be missed!

Emerging Engineers finalists will give a short presentation on the technical papers they have submitted.

Each presenter will then be quizzed by the audience and the judges with the judges then choosing the winning entry. So please come along, ask a few questions and support the North East entrants.

The Emerging Engineers Award (formerly the Graduate and Student Papers Competition) encourages student, graduate and trainee technician Members of the ICE to submit a paper on any civil engineering related topic in the format of a research paper, report or written exercise essay.

Applicants compete for prizes in their Regional Final, where the winners will be shortlisted to compete at the Emerging Engineers Award Global Final for prestige, the ultimate cash prize and the Institution Medal as won in 2015 by the ICE North East’s regional winner Paul Chambers.

The Emerging Engineers Award (EEA) promotes and rewards excellence in the communication of civil engineering ideas, research, best practice on projects and design.

The challenges faced in the remediation of shallow mineworkings have increased now that coal fired power stations across the UK (the source of PFA) are being phased out. The only two local coal fired power stations have either shut or converted to bio-mass. PFA is now hauled from Liverpool, with increased haulage costs and effect on remediation programmes. Delivered by Ellen Dempster BSc(Hons)., MSc., FGS., AIMMM.

Challenges of drilling in areas of abandoned mine workings” is illustrated by a Northumberland case study. As Head of Mining and Technical Services for North East Deep Mines, the author was responsible for all aspects of drilling activities. These operations required a huge variety of techniques and innovations in difficult working conditions. Subsequently as a Mining Consultant he has been involved in many projects requiring drilling to provide opinions on the post mining activities such as gas, rising mine water and subsidence. The Kelpies are the world’s largest equine sculpture and since their opening in April 2014 they have become one of Scotland’s most well-known and visited landmarks.
